Gift Iyioku

About

Gift Iyioku is a research and teaching fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. Her work focuses on US-Africa relations, human capital development, migration, and the institutional challenges shaping governance and development across African states. At Hoover, Iyioku conducts policy research on Africa-focused issues and analyzes trends in America’s engagement with the continent.

Iyioku’s research examines how demographic change, education systems, and institutional capacity influence development outcomes and state effectiveness. Her recent policy work analyzes Nigeria’s education crisis and the implications of large-scale educational exclusion for economic growth, governance, and security. She has also examined the strategic implications of competition between the United States and China for Africa’s economic and political partnerships.

Before joining Stanford University, Iyioku worked with the Africa Progress Group and the UNESCO Institute of African Culture and International Understanding. In these roles she contributed research and policy analysis on demographic change, education reform, and development strategy across African states. Her work supported initiatives and policy research produced under the leadership of former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, including the Africa Progress Group’s report on Africa’s demographic transformation.

Iyioku is the author of policy and research publications on education reform, development policy, and international engagement with Africa.

She received her PhD in German Studies from Stanford University with a minor in political science focusing on international relations and political theory. She also holds a master’s degree in modern languages and literature from the University of Alabama and a bachelor’s degree in European studies from the University of Ibadan.
